Tobacco-related disease mortality among men who switched from cigarettes to spit tobacco
This is one of the first research studies to examine mortality among users of spit tobacco who had actually switched from cigarette smoking to only spit tobacco use only. The large number study was based on enrollees in the United States American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study II (a 20 year study of 116,000 men from 1982 through 2002!). a total of over 4,440 'switchers' were identified and followed, and the study found that men who switched from smoking cigarettes to using spit tobacco had a higher rate of death from all causes, including 1) lung cancer, 2) coronary heart disease, and 3) stroke - than those who had never used tobacco or those who were former cigarette smokers and quit using tobacco entirely.
The research's results
support the stand that smokers who want to quit should be offered safe,
clinically proved treatments for smoking cessation, including
pharmacotherapies such as medicinal nicotine or antidepressants, behavioral
counseling and telephone quit lines. Did you know that: A tin of smokeless tobacco or snus tobacco currently being produced in the United States will most likely have have 4 times the amount of nicotine content than that of cigarettes? Think of it this way: One tin of smokeless, spitless is equal to 4 packs of cigarettes in nicotine content! Posted by: Bruce W. Adkins, Director, Division of Tobacco Prevention, West Virginia Bureau for Public Health
Alcohol and tobacco 'riskier' than some illegal drugs!
Scientists call for a more rational debate about the relative risks posed by drugs as a study shows that alcohol and tobacco cause more physical and social harm than some illicit substances.
The authors of the study entitled 'Development of a rational scale to assess the harm of drugs of potential misuse', argue that the current methodology and processes underlying drug classification systems are generally "neither specified nor transparent, which reduces confidence in their accuracy and undermines health- education messages".
The researchers have developed and tested a new framework to assess the actual risks posed to society by selected illegal drugs. Five legal drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, were also taken on board and classified for reference in the study, based on three parameters: physical harm, dependence and social harm.
The research results, published on 24 March
2007 by
The Lancet Magazine They rank higher (alcohol fifth, tobacco ninth) than some illegal substances such as cannabis (11th) or ecstasy (18th). Heroin and cocaine rank respectively first and the second.
"Our results emphasize that the exclusion of
alcohol and tobacco from the [UK] Misuse

We have a total of 259 school staff (teachers, counselors, nurses, etc.) certified to provide the program. We have 17 County Board of Education Staff; 57 community members/volunteers; and 23 certified facilitators that work at other institutions i.e. Boys * Girls clubs, juvenile detention centers, alternative schools, private schools, residential clinics etc... In all we have 356 Active Certified Facilitators
ATS YTD Statistics So far this grant year we’ve had 160 evals turned in, the quit rate is 17% and the reduce rate is 18%.
NOT YTD Statistics So far this grant year we’ve had 188 evals turned in, the quit rate is 20% and the reduce rate is 60%. We still have 33 programs that have not submitted their evals and 25 programs that participated in the WVU studies. So I expect this number to go up drastically once I start receiving evaluation packets.
By my estimates we have 330 Middle, High and Vocational schools in the state of those 136 (42%) have certified facilitators working in the school. We also have 8 private schools that have trained facilitators.
The following schools are providing or have provide N-O-T & ATS programs in their schools this year.
