Lung Facts

Lung disease is the third leading cause of death in America.

More than 4,000 West Virginians die each year -- 12 every day -- from smoking-related diseases.

Smoking kills more Americans annually than alcohol, cocaine, crack, heroin, homicide, suicide, car accidents, fires and AIDS

combined.

West Virginians pay $897 million a year for the direct health care costs of smoking.

Every day in the US about 3,000 children start smoking; 1,000 of them will die prematurely from smoking-related diseases.

West Virginia's youth smoking rate is one of the highest in the nation. 28.5% percent of the state's high school youth smoke.

One in five deaths in West Virginia is related to smoking.

Wheeling Ohio County Board of Health knows the health risks when our children and families are exposed to secondhand smoke. As they consider revising the regulation we are pleased that Wheeling Ohio County Board of Health has received feedback from the citizens of Ohio Valley.

Not On Tobacco®(N-O-T) is a 10-session stop smoking program for teens. This school-based program helps teens quit smoking while increasing healthy lifestyle behaviors. The program is offered on a voluntary basis to teens who want to quit smoking. A twist to the program is the addition of an alternative to suspension component for teens who opt to participate in a tobacco education program rather than be suspended from school for smoking regulation violations. Trainings for adult facilitators are held on a regular basis around the state. Participation in the program is free.  For more information, contact Tony Richards

Teens Against Tobacco Use® (T.A.T.U.)
is a teen teaching program in which teens help younger students make the decision to be tobacco free. Armed with the latest tobacco prevention information, teens are empowered to be advocates for a smoke-free community. Trainings for adult facilitators are held on a regular basis around the state. Participation in the program is free. Beginning fall 2004, we will be establishing Community Raze Crews. For more information, contact Patty Hughes.
or visit the T.A.T.U. webpage

Freedom From Smoking®
is a small-group clinic program for adult smokers who want to quit. The eight-session behavior modification program helps smokers set a quit date and provides them the tools to keep them smoke free. Trainings for adult facilitators are held on a regular basis. Clinics are held in locations around the state by ALA-trained facilitators. There may be a fee for the clinics.  All facilitator trainings are free.  For more information, contact Kelli Caseman.

An interactive clinic is online for smokers wishing to quit.  This program is perfect for those with hectic schedules, since it is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Visit Freedom From Smoking Online!
